It has come out in recent times that young people, particularly young girls are cutting themselves. This is inevitably very distressing for their parents and carers. Cutting is usually the 'canary in the coal mine' attempting to bring attention within the person and to those around them that something serious needs addressing. Don't Panic...this is a good thing. If there's something wrong with engine number four you'd want a light to flash and sound to beep until the problem is fixed. The reasons for cutting are many and varied but I would describe it as an external pain that diverts attention from a more painful internal one. Developing a therapeutic alliance with the person is essential to begin the process of helping them find strategies to deal with the very real challenges.
